Use of electroslag billets instead of forgings during flange production

In modern chemical and petrochemical industries, products in the form of annular billets of 'flange' type are widely applied for connecting the various pipe-lines. The flanges are operated under severe climate conditions and therefore, strict inspection of them is performed. The flanges are manufactured from steels of St20, 09G2S, 10G2, 08Kh18N10T grades. The steel are made in electric furnaces. However quality of cast steels is not high, and additional treatment such as forging is applied. It has been shown that high-quality castings can be produced by method of centrifugal electroslag casting. Flux contains calcium fluoride, corundum, magnesite, and silica in this case. High-quality flanges are produced.
